Lingr restaurant st pete menu7/12/2023 For desserts, the focus was very Scandi - which I was excited as my parents are Nordic. ![]() The wok fried snapper (crisp edging) and fan jiu (‘burnt’ caramelized rice) when paired together made this a very dry dish - separately they would have been great when paired with a moist option, or they could have provided a subtle sauce. For the mains, the chicken was dry/tough and not as fragrant/flavorful as I would expect, as it was meant to be combined with the plum sauce and sweet potato wraps (dry!) similar to how Peking duck is served. The steamed bao with shiitake and gailan were perfect spiciness, and definitely ideal when also flavored with sauce from the dumplings. ![]() Potato and asparagus dumplings were mild, flavorful when the sauce spooned atop. The appetizers were the stars of the show, I’d make a meal of those. Least favorite was “water” which seemed overpowered by the dill, perhaps they can switch out with a pine needle or red clover. “Wood” tasted much like a Negroni, as the server expertly described. Next favorite was “fire”, would have liked it just a bit spicier. Of the 4 cocktails, the “Metal” was by far the best - a mix of subtle bitterness with botanicals (which was likely the mix of baijiu and aperol). Food pacing was perfect - we did not feel rushed, nor waiting too long between courses. Service was fine and receptive to feedback, although we were brought a drink we didn’t order - not once, but twice (not our direct server’s error). Menu is interesting and innovative, a great mix of Nordic and Asian/Cantonese influence, definitely very novel for the Tampa Bay region. The owner/chef was active during our dining visit, checking in with a couple tables and helping at the bar. And definitely book a reservation weeks in advance for optimal seating. Parking is limited for a Saturday night so plan ahead. Small contemporary indoor seating with minimalist decor and sufficient lighting to focus more on the food and conversation. The venue is nice, especially for Florida with plenty of outdoor seating with overhead cover for inclement weather. I was looking forward to this restaurant - great concept, quiet location away from the tourists, adventurous menu - a potential hidden gem like ones I had enjoyed in NYC or Singapore.

Obliteration room by yayoi kusama7/12/2023 ![]() Please sign up on the Tate’s website for updates on the release of tickets for 1 October onwards. Infinity Mirror Rooms needs to be booked in advance for a fee, however please note that at the time of writing, general release tickets have sold out until 30 September 2022, except for evening events (tickets are available for members). Obliteration Room is free of charge to gallery visitors. This is a wonderful opportunity for you, and your family, to be involved in a work by one of the world’s most exciting and popular contemporary artists. Obliteration Room began as a completely white space which, over time, will evolve into an explosion of colour with the addition of coloured stickers, which visitors are invited to use. In addition to Kusama’s highly acclaimed, wonderfully hypnotic Infinity Mirror Rooms installation at the Tate Modern (which, due to demand, has been extended to June 2023), the gallery is also hosting her Obliteration Room installation where visitors can add to the development of the finished piece. This comes as a powerful example of art as therapy – and in Kusama’s case, it was a ‘therapy’ that inspired others, as well.Yayoi Kusama at the Tate Modern: Infinity Mirror Rooms and Obliteration Room Kusama has repeatedly used the dot motif across her career. She admits that “ if it were not for art, would have killed a long time ago“. It is remarkable how Kusama overcame her dark past and used it to create such positive, colorful art works. The entry includes access to other collections in the museum. 160 likes, 4 comments - Aubrey Reynolds (aubreyannreynolds) on Instagram: 'We got obliterated (in the obliteration room) by Yayoi Kusama. ![]() Polka-dots become movement… Polka dots are a way to infinity.’ Tickets for the Kusama exhibition can be found on the M+ website and cost 150 for full-time students and 240 for adults. Using colorful stickers, they collectively transformed a vapid white room into a warm, colorful sanctuary. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. In 2002, for the installation The Obliteration Room, Kusama put polka dots into the hands of visitors themselves. The steps below me began to fall apart and I fell down the stairs straining my ankle’. The polka-dot pattern soon becomes her trademark, having different connotations – she explains: ‘ polka-dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life. On one her notable earlier experiences that had an impact on her works, she writes: ‘One day I was looking at the red flower patterns of the tablecloth on a table, and when I looked up I saw the same pattern covering the ceiling… I felt as if I had begun to self-obliterate… I ran desperately up the stairs. Self-obliteration has been a long-standing theme for Yayoi Kusama (. In 1973 she moved back to Japan and in 1977 she voluntarily admitted herself to a hospital where she has spent the rest of her life. Throughout the exhibition, the room gradually obliterates as it becomes covered in dots. Here she experimented with different movements, from pop art to the hippie counterculture. ![]() Following an abusive childhood, she studied the Japanese art of Nihonga painting in Kyoto before moving to New York in 1957. Her work, deeply rooted in the artist’s own fears and troubled past, is edgy and obsessive, with dots as a reoccurring motif. Yayoi Kusama (born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan) is one of the most influential art figures of the past century, inspiring personalities such as Andy Warhol or Yoko Ono, among other artists, fashion designers, filmmakers or architects. Looking back at her biography and past works could offer a deeper understanding of her obsessive art. It is a fun project, but one that is based on the artist’s troubled childhood, that has more in that one can imagine. ![]() The white room works as a canvas for visitors – its furniture and details blend in together as colorful dots take over. ‘The Obliteration Room’ was fist displayed at the Queensland Art Gallery in 2002, as an art project for children, and in 2012, it was presented at Tate Modern. What’s more is that visitors can contribute to the piece, in a participatory process. A particular piece was “The Obliteration Room” (2002 – present) that has more than what its looks convey. Looking like a typical American house in the exterior, with generic furniture and fittings in the interior, it captures the visitor with a vivid comostion: all is white, waiting to be covered in colorful dot stickers. New York’s David Zwirner art gallery was recently host to the ‘Give Me Love’ installation – a collection by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

Gallant bone and tissue lyrics7/12/2023 ![]() You can visualize that questing in lyrics for songs like “Open Up,” which was the first track Gallant and STINT made together. Sometimes those environments cross over and they’re vast deserts, empty swamps, things like that, and to me that has something to do with, not just loneliness, but searching for something, where you can’t really see anything around you upfront. I think a lot of the time I had this picture of this environment in my head and I would just kind of paint that environment. “I think there’s a lot of mental wandering or meandering going on. “The gold sad face is supposed to represent optimism and the emotion and the pursuit of really knowing something greater,” Gallant explains. The visual identity for Ology centers around a golden sad face overlaying a current photograph of Gallant and symbolizes growth when juxtaposed with Zebra’s cover photograph of himself as a somewhat depressed child. The lyrics of the Nineties R&B and gospel-influenced “Bone + Tissue” read like verses of encoded scripture, but Gallant is clear that his intentions are to “try to subvert religion having any place in society.” Begging for affirmation, he sings, “And anytime I bite the hand that feeds, won’t you lie through your teeth and tell me I’m a monument to more than bone + tissue?” “I realized that when I was writing it, I was basically putting myself up on a chalkboard and dissecting every element that I could,” says Gallant of Ology, quickly adding, “in a non-narcissistic way.” Tackling confessions of loneliness, self-doubt, and regret, the album is like a series of diary entries sung as streams of consciousness. “Weight in Gold” is reminiscent of vintage soul records with a twist of Prince, which was enough to catch the attention one of his heroes, Seal, who ended up covering the song for Gallant’s “ In the Room” YouTube series. Fitting somewhere in the center of Venn diagram of soul, R&B, future bass, drum & bass, and pop, Gallant’s sound has been dubbed neo-soul, alt-R&B, and more. ![]() The radio DJ Zane Lowe, who made the soulful single “Weight in Gold” his first World Premiere on his inaugural Beats 1 show back in June 2015, inadvertently turning all eyes onto Gallant, recently described the musician as existing in a “creative schizophrenic place,” which Gallant confirms. Shorts by Dries Van Noten.Īnd his voice is what ties the album, which also forms a study of his musical influences, together. Mining the rough, future beats of Zebra, STINT, the album’s primary producer whom Gallant found on SoundCloud, worked to put Gallant’s voice, namely his falsetto, front and center. Gallant, who performs under just his last name, self-released the haunting, future bass-filled EP Zebra in 2014, detailing his struggles living in New York during and after his time at NYU (where he study music anthropology and sociology), trying to express his feelings “in the only way” he knew how. Looking to escape the anxieties of New York and the music industry, the Columbia, Maryland-raised singer moved to Los Angeles in 2013, where he was discovered by manager Jake Udell. “I can’t really talk to people face-to-face,” he admits, “so with this album, I guess I was coming off the realization that being very honest and letting people in a little bit means something to somebody.” His voice is deep and soft, and he takes his time reflecting on his preparations for the LP. “I really just wanted to challenge myself to dig even deeper and dissect myself even more, and learn more about myself in the process,” he says over the phone, having just landed in New York for his album listening party. “ I want to be a better human.” Can you buy happiness on Craigslist? These are both thoughts that passed through Christopher Gallant’s mind as he worked on Ology, his début album which also serves as an introspective study of himself.

The last stop on market street7/12/2023 ![]() As I read this book over and over to my first through fifth graders, I came to share the belief of the ALA that Last Stop on Market Street is indeed worthy of the Newbery Medal, in large part because it is accessible for my students, many of whom cannot read Newbery winners because the reading level is too high for them, but also because it is intimately, immediately relatable. In his essay, de la Peña says that he strives to "write books about diverse characters, but now I try to place them in stories that have nothing to do with diversity, not overtly anyway," and this is definitely true here. Last Stop on Market Street is a book that, unlike most, shows my students people of all colors (and their colors) as well as people who share their socioeconomic status. ![]() The majority of my students speak English as a second language and struggle to read at grade level. Almost 90% of the student body at my school qualifies for free lunch and many of them live in a home with multiple families, are foster children or do not live with both parents. The student body at the school where I am the librarian is almost 90% Hispanic, with African Americans, Asians and whites making up the other 10%. Then, I decided to take the book to school and read it to as many kids as possible over the course of the week and my opinion changed, almost immediately. I was surprised and a little angry, thinking about the amazing novels that had come out in 2015, and began writing, in my head, a heated response to the librarians on the committee that made this out-of-the-box choice. When I heard that Last Stop on Market Street won the Newbery, I did a double take, rereading the announcement on the American Library Association's website. Traditionally, this award is given to novels, although this is not specified in the criteria, which states that the award be given to the "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." Last Stop on Market Street also, very deservedly, won a Caldecott honor, an award given to the "most distinguished picture book for children." I received a review copy of this book when it came out and, as sadly sometimes happens with great books, I read it but didn't get around to reviewing it. ![]() A week ago, Last Stop on Market Street, a picture book by YA author Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson, won the Newbery award.
